Fast drying ground effect?
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, July 22, 2004 11:33 AM
What's the best way to do a ground cover that's fast drying? It doesn't need to be beautiful, as it will be covered by a light powdering of snow (for which I will probably use plastier of paris). So it will represent frozen earth.

I'm considering using styrofoam that's been cut by an electric wire cutter, then painting it brown with acrylics, with some light sand and PVC glue mixed into the paint. Thoughts?

I would put a layer of spack filler (or Celluclay) over the styrofoam to make it look more natural, as for the snow might i sujest Noch snow as it has more of a sheen to it .

Something that also works well for snow is either Brioschi (effervescent antacid from drugstore) or Hudson & Allen Studio snow (really good) Product No. 9604. You will have to mash up the Brioschi but the H&A snow is all ready for you.

I use actual earth, sifted, mixed with 50/50 water and white glue mix. Leave it out in the sun, or a dry place, and it'll dry in a couple of hours, and it looks absolutely great.

I know scluptamold dries fairly quickly and you could paint it before it is completely dry.

As for snow I use Woodland scenics snow
