Ok.. I have the stargate base from the old figure kit.. I have refined it as well as I can but after a few attempts I cannot get a convincing effect for the whirlpool like centre. Any Ideas out there??? Would be appreciated.

Hmm...I'm not familiar with the kit, but how about heating a piece of clear styrene, and twisting in from the center to get a spiraling vortex effect? You could mount the styrene in a frame and attach a piece of wood or something for a handle in the middle of the styrene. Heat it with...hmmm...well, you'll have to figure that part out! When the plastic gets soft, give the handle a slow, constant twist, and see what you get. If it looks good, cut it to fit, and there you go!

I'd like to see your Gate... I'm scratchbuilding a gate room and plan to try to simulate the event horizon with a sheet of rippled clear plastic, tinted blue and then use the blue flashing LED's I purchased to backlight it and see if it will create the effect I'm looking for... Of course, I'll have to cover the the top of the rear portion of the gate room so that it's difficult to see the LED. But I think it may be acceptable. If you can, would you PM me some pics of your gate. And if you're interested, I'll try and get some pic of mine to send to you.

I do wish MGM would get on the ball and produce some good kits and Technical Manuals for references... it's been a pain trying to find some good ones to scratchbuild with.

J.Hulk.. Good Idea about the twisted sheet!! I was not thinking off anything so ambitious. Just the event horizon at rest so to speak. I tried the rippled shower screen but it did not really satisfy me. It is just getting that silvery rippled watery effect, not as simple as first appears.

What about clear resin, just tinted? Create a mould the size of the circle, then line it with some crumpled aluminum foil (the cooking kind Smile [:)] ) and tint some clear resin. Pour in, and when set, it'll look like the surface of a rippled body of water, which is something the stargate always resembled, at least to me.

Theres a local guy that premeired a scratchbuilt gate at one of the local shows. He has already sold the rights to one of the resin companies so expect big things soon.

BTW....It looks absolutely awsome.

You could still place the lightsheet behind some textured material to gain a little more 3D. The problem is that you are trying to recreate a computer generated process in model form. Just as hard to make convincing fire.
