1st Diorama idea and Glue confusion
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, August 10, 2004 11:33 PM
Hiya all

Ok here I am building my first ever diorama (well technically second but my first long term diorama) when I come across a wonderful article on "Building better trees"in the December 2002 finescale modeller magazine.

Cool says I until oh ummm great so what brand rubber cement does this guy use anyway, only rubber cement that I can remember goes back to my childhood years and was a blue and white tin with a bear on it (the glue was yellow and tacky and very stringy when pulled out). I decide to go and check out what rubber cement means here in Australia and to my dismay all anyone can tell me is that it is something used in building houses etc. Great no help there back to the drawing board.

Next attempt takes me to ringing the Glue Manufacturing Companies over here, could be, maybe its, sounds similar to our contact adhesive.

So here I sit still confused and not able to make any real progress on my trees so now I have bare trees with no peeling bark bits and I'm about ready to throw the whole idea in the bin.

Anyone out there able to give me a name brand of a rubber cement and tell me whether it is the one used in building houses or whether it is the bear tin one please?

Thanks folks, (my knight, black dragon and dungeon keep ruin will be most grateful) not to mention myself.

Cheers
Lori

Forget the rubber cement and get yourself a can of spray glue. I don't know what brands are available to you in the great land of Australia, but 3M's Super 77 is the weapon of choice here. Build up your tree trunks and branches, then simply spray the outer tips of the branches with the spray glue and sprinkle on your leaf material. This is how professional model makers do it. I have made literally hundreds of trees this way.

Mrs,

Another suggestion is to use carpenters white glue (Elmers here). I have used it with good success. You can delute it with water and either spray or brush on and then do Peridexion said sprinkle on the foliage.

I just made my first tree based on the wire armature method described in Modelling Mastercalss terrains. I posted a picture in this forum. I tried a bunch of different glues for my folliage on the tree. I suppose I shouldn't have used the clump stuff from woodland scenics, but I think it turned out ok. What I settled on was Goop. Not sure what it's called in AU, but it's cheap and works. Hope this helps a little.
