scer16,

You can accomplish all kinds of terrain affects by using Liquid Starch (ask your mom, she'll set you up), Brown Paper (paper grocery bag), and some thin wire. You can use wadded up newspapers to form the rough shape of the ground, and attach it to the base via wire. Then you saturate brown paper in the liquid starch and overlay it onto the wadded paper in succeeding layers until the affect you're looking for is achieved.

I done a "Cave Exploring" (Spelunking) diorama one time using this technique... even incorporating an entrance passage using a paper towel tube with spackling stalagmites/stalactite's inside, and four cave explorers. Below are a couple pictures of how it came out.... kinda like a chunk of the hillside was removed.

Hope this helps some,
Take care,
Frank

Greetings fellow Spelunker! Cool [8D]

Standing in "Echo Valley", in Chimney Rock Cave, Claypool Hill, Virginia. Winter 1981.

When I was a kid, I spent about as much time in Chimney Cave as I did out, and later on, creating the first accurate map of it with a couple of my fellow caving enthusiast friends (1.8 mile interconnecting levels). It was called Chimney Cave because there was a 10' x 4' opening 45' above the center of the big front room.... at the turn of the century, Church Services were held within this natural auditorium.
In the winter of '2000, however, this fellow purchased the property and collapsed Chimney Cave....... to build a freaking Wendy's! Angry [:(!]Evil [}:)]Angry [:(!]
When Jesus Christ physically walked on this earth, the column I am standing beside was a stalagmite a little taller than I am in this picture... now it is forever gone. Disapprove [V]
"Mister, may your business be cursed for destroying such a wondrous NATURAL attraction on this good earth!"
A group of us tried to get the state of Virginia to save it, because of the numerous Indian murals back about 100yds inside, and a "C.William 1621" date on the wall in the voluminous entrance gallery... but it didn't work..... you can't appeal a stick of dynamite.

Thanks again, Smile [:)]

Frank, What a tragic end to what was surely a very beautiful cave. Saddly, too many of our precious natural treasures such as this have been destroyed in such a foolish and reckless manner, especially one so historically significant. Remind me to boycott Wendy's. Angry [:(!]
Our Grotto just won the bid for the 2006 NSS convention, so if you're out and about, think about dropping in. I'll be the guy in charge of the beer.

Could I trouble you to e-mail me the information on the convention? I would love to attend, thanks! Smile [:)] (remember, Frank, look for the guy distributing the beer)Evil [}:)]

You ever been to the "Lost Sea" in Sweetwater, Tn., or heard about the Navy divers who explored the bottom of the big lake inside? Shuttering to say the least!!

Thanks again,
Frank
