My second diorama, Vietnam seals patrol & VC (pictures)

there's incredible tension in that scene..."what's going to happen next?" was the question that came to mind when I saw the trap.
the vegetation in and out of the water is awesome; as is the water color and texture itself. what a great story this tells. thanks for showing us the next stage of the diorama.

World class. Beautifully done. I am no expert, but I have read pretty much everything on this hobby and your work is as good if not better than anything in any book I've read. Really nicely done. I coan't say enough.

First class dio. All the elements of suspense are present. Great poses on the figures and the setting is first rate; been there.

Wonderful dio, I must be slow because it took me a second to connect the rope to the wood in the wonderfully crafted water.
john is that going to be your signature? about the helicopters? you could go to profile and check the bottom signature box and enter that in

The water is made with clear poliester resin, in Spain we used the one named ·Cronolita" (with 2% of hardener for the resin); several layers of 3-5 mm top, with some drops of flat earth Tamiya acrylic paint (more drops the first layers, less drops the next ones, only clear the last one). The riples can be made just before the resin poured, with a stick or something like that.
It sounds dificult, but is easy, just try it.....

really like the dio csago!! how are the nades on the pole set off?? I'm assuming that its a booby trap. really like it. great concept too!!!

Thanks, and about granades, go to my pictures web, go to page 2, look at "sealpatrol15.jpg" picture and you can see there the wire running from the brigde to the rings of the granades.

Intense, very intense. This diorama has it all, suspense, excellent foliage and water, the addition of wildlife and a storyline that keeps you asking what is going to happen next.

I've been wanting to do a VN dio myself for a while now. Just a couple questions: I read how you did the water, but what did you make the foilage from like the grassy type plants)? What kit did you get the figures from? Is it possible to get kits of, say, a village? Was thinking of doing a village on a rice paddy type thing with invaders from one or the other side (US/VC). Would this be realistic?

This is my first attempt at a dio, but I have a few figures (1/35 Tamiya) and jeeps from WWII. I've done a lot of reading on VN and I think I would rather do one on that. Is it possible to convert my WWII figs. to VN without looking too fake? I know--lots of questions, but if any could be answered, it would be a great help.

The effect near the legs was made with a wood stick, picking up and down several times when the poliester clear resin was almost poured. If you want more "wave" you can make it with acrilic artist clear gel (mine is "heavy gloss", used to give more "body" to acrilic artist paints), picking it with a wood stick to make the jumping water.

About the high grass, it´s unmade hemp rope, cut to side, tied with wire, painted with aerograph in green tones, glued to base into holes with pva glue, and pushed down as you like it with your fingers. It´s easy and very cheap ¡¡¡

The figures are mainly "Seal 2" kit from DML Dragon, with the beret head from Tamiya "British strechers" or "Ambulance Land Rover". The Vietcong figure is one of "NVA Sappers" kit from DML Dragon too.

About villages, I know long time ago there was a kit of a Vietnam village house from "Belgo", but I´m afraid you must make your own houses with balsa wood, hemp rope, big brush hairs, and so. You can check Google for Vietnam Villages for models to do.

Sorry, the jeep from WWII was not often seen in Vietnam; the usual stuff was the M-38 and M-151 Mutt; and it´s much difficult to transform WWII figures to Vietnam ones, so my advice is to use some of the DML Dragon kits (not expensive at all, very good for less money, especially the last items like "Marine Recons" "Seals 2", "SOG-Macv" "1st cavalry division", "NVA Sappers" and so)

OK, I have a M151A2 Mutt model , so that will work fine. I guess I'll have to take yer advice on the balsa wood for the huts, couldn't find any thing on ready-made models anywhere. (altho I found a cool looking vietnam temple with Bhudda I think sitting there which may be incorporated into my idea somehow . Couldn't find but one VN figures kit either....must keep looking ....Man, all these ideas rolling thru my head now must put them on paper.........

Ok, that's all for now. May have more questions later as the dio takes shape. Bear with me. If anyone has seen or knows of any VN huts or village kits or ideas, that would be appreciated too..
