AM I CRAZY?????

You may not be crazy, but probably are a glutton for punishment. ;)

There's two ways of doing it that I can think of. One would be to pour layer after layer of clear resin, but I think it would end pretty cloudy and striated, not to mention expensive. The other way would be to build a plexiglass box with a hole cut in the top for the hull to sit in. Then, use the resin to make the water and wave effects on top of the plexiglass.

I was just reading an article the other day, I don't even remember what mag it was, that described exactly what you want to do. It was with a boat obviously, but the technique would definitely work for what you want to do too. If I remember correctly he cut a rough opening to sit the ship in and then filled the gaps with little strips of light cardboard or card stock and then finished it off with some resin or epoxy once the ship was seated properly. I'll see if I can track down the article for you. I don't have a scanner but I could at least give you the magazine and article name. I'll see what I can find.

edit: Sorry, I forgot to mention that it was the technique of building a plexi-glass box, not the other one.

Ok, I found it. It is an article in FSM (go figure) June 1987. The author calls it a "cube of the sea" display. If you can't dig it up anywhere let me know and I might be able to scan it at work for you. Just let me know.

http://www.modelwarships.com has some reviews of 1/700 and 1/720 carriers. Two reviews in particular recommend a set of aftermarket plane sets by Fujimi in 1/700 and a GMM (Gold Medal Models) photoetch set.

I personally have never used any of those products. I'm jsut passing on what I've read.

I saw something similar once at a hobby show years ago. A guy had built a scene, where a destroyer was depth chargeing a German U-boat. It was quite incredible how he'd done the underwater explosions! and the U-boat was pretty damaged as well. It was a pretty tall diorama that i wish I could've gotten pictures of!
