Ox carts at Palawan
Posted by Kevleerey on Monday, May 30, 2005 9:49 PM
Hi everybody, I am thinking about doing a diorama of POW's leaving Palawan (sp?), Where would i get the water buffalo/ox carts they used for transporting wounded/sick POWs, like what kits are good. I also need to decide where it is happening at.If it is at the prison gate, I would also need to make the gate and get some dead jap guards, and if i make it in the jungle i need to make bamboo.(how to do thatQuestion [?]) Also what is a good set for soldiers of the 6th and some POWs. My uncle said he will get me some kits for graduation, and I also got some more grad. gift $$ to spend.Big Smile [:D]

Thanks!!

I can answer a couple of your questions.

For the ox carts, try italerie, I think they have some old carts on their frontier sets and such. In 1/72 that is.

In 1/72, there are several different companies you can go to for figs.

Id go with the gate scene, It will be a heck of a lot easier than trying to replicate the bamboo. sorry i cant answer the others.

For a reference on making water buffalo check out the Navy Seal diorama by csago in the diorama forum from early December 2004. Type csago in the advanced search and search by author. Then click on csago's user I.D. and it will link you to his posts. He converted a Dragon/DML Donkey into a realistic water buffalo, dripping chin and all.

As far as all the other questions. There is a booklet you may be able to find in the local library that covers farm carts constructed in miniature. I bought a copy from eBay awhile back and it is a neat book to have in the reference pile. I will dig it out and get the ISBN and Author for you.

Secondly to make bamboo another great reference is Model Buildings Masterclass by Roy Porter it shows an easy way to make bamboo out of the long side pieces of sprue left over after the kit has been removed with three every day tools. One miniature Swiss file, a power hand drill with adjustable chuck and a piece of sheet metal. It works really well and you can make as many lengths and thickness you want.

Thanks! I'll have to go to the library and see what I can find.
