Need suggestion for construction of burnt out rusted vehicle
Posted by archangel571 on Monday, June 20, 2005 2:04 PM
hey everyone,
I have two AMT 1/35 T72 kits, and for all I know those were the biggest pile of crap i've seen molded in plastic (I've since then learnt to look at reviews and swear by tamiya...) Anyway, I have this itch to use them in a desert diorama with there is one burnt out entirely rusted T72, and one freshly burnt T72 with a bit more scratch built detail added. next to them is an m1a1ha OIF version, somewhere along the theme of "We are back." (I don't remember if our forces actually pushed into Iraq during desert storm, so I am open to criticism.) Anyway, in general I am just wondering if anyone has any suggestions of how to contruct that rusted T72, techniques and painting wise, since I don't know how well a burnt surface of steel can weather in the desert. (only in ROTC) I am thinking about having it leaning down in a ditch on one side, with two large holes blown from inside out prying the upper hull armor apart, or filled with chain gun holes from the cobra or apache. part of the front and the lowered canon can be covered into the sand (hence the idea of "Desert Storm"). Any feedback is welcomed.

There are some pic's of the destroyed T-55 I have done, not the best but o.k.

I used real rust, and food spices for the rusting, as well as pastel.

Any questions, just e-mail me at stobs5@rogers.com.

You may also want to try a Google search.

Anthony! Nice job. I know there's a resin kit for a "brewed-up" T-55. But it's 1/35-they may have a 1/72 kit as well-sorry can't remember the manufacturer. Useless. ;-)

Thanks for the comments, I don't know if you are saying that my tank in 1/72 but it is in 1/35 scale.

There is a resin kit (I also forgot the manufacturer) but I did not use it, I wanted to try and scratch build the damage, and it turned out a million times better then I thought.

Anyway, good luck!

I think he means T-72, not 1/72. But, no, there is no interior set, nor desroyed hulk set for a T-72. Best bet is to follow what Anthony has done using actual rust. Another option is a product called Rust-All. It is a multi-step process that imparts a ructed look to most materials. It can be applied lightly or added on heavy for whatever you are looking for.

By the way, we did go into Iraq in ODS. ROTC should be teaching you military history, what have they come to?? The Hail Mary, as it became called, put 3 US Armored Divisions and a French Division coming from the west and swinging deep into Iraq, then turning south and linking up with USMC forces in Kuwait who came from the south and west. It was a giant pincer movement. So yes, your idea is feasable. Would be better with T-55s though, T-72s were kept up around Baghdad this time around, with older tanks pushed to the south. Most of the tanks destroyed in ODS were stripped clean and taken away by scrap vendors. Not much was left after the war. The same was happening this time around as well. We would destroy an enemy vehicle, or leave a disabled US vehicle, and within a few days, it was pretty much stripped of all usable parts with just the pieces too big to carry away being left behind. The are pretty efficiant at scraping things out and reusing them there.

Don't know if you get a mag called Tamiya Model Magazine International in NJ but if you can get hold of a back issue namely Issue 113, March 2005 . In that issue Miguel Jimenez give a blow by blow account on a burnt out T55 in desert colours. Contact them here www.tamiyamodelmagazine.com
