Modeling evergreeens/Conifers? (pine, spruce and cedar trees)
Posted by jboutin on Monday, June 20, 2005 3:02 PM
I am planning on doing a 'crash' dio showing a plane in the trees somewhere in the pacific NW. I have just started to look at making the trees, Since most trees in the NW are conifers, I would like to put several in the dio. It is going to have a 1:48 airplane in it.

Any ideas on making evergreens in that scale? What is available aftermarket?

Thanks for any help.Smile [:)]

The very best info I've found so far is in a book entitled, TERRAIN MODELLING, by Richard Windrow. It's published by Osbrey Modelling. With all due respect to Kalmbach Publishing Co -- ( I have most of their how-to books. ) Terrain Modelling covers, not only how to make many different types of trees, but also how to produce varing kinds of foliage such as palm leaves. I got my copy through the Military Book Club and I think Squadron Mail Order carries it. You should be able to get it through your local hobby shop, too.
My 2 cents [2c]
I just checked-- this book has a section specifically on making conifers and pines. The photos of the ones made by the author look so real that they could be bonsai trees instead of fakes. Also, another question in this section of the Forum asks about making realistic swamps. This book shows how to do this, too. Smile [:)]

JB,

TMMI did a "how to" article on making conifers a while ago, drop me an email to remind me to search for it so I can send it to you.

Cheers

Check out model railway supplies. These guys are spoilt for choice when it comes to scenery accessories.
My favourite company for stuff like that is Noch. They sell all types of grasses, trees, snow powder etc etc.

Hudson and Allen make evergreen branchs (which I'm told are actually a type of ground cover fern that grows in the Pacific Northwest and are preserved with glycerin) these make great looking evergreen trees. If you live in the northwest you may be able to get these free on the ground(if you do let me know I could use a pile of these as they are not cheap)Many places sell Hudson and Allen products their individual leaves are great too for hardwood trees (also an expensive route to take , but the trees look great.) good luck Lonnie

Ron. G. That is way too cool. They look so good! I only need like four trees for my dio but that is so easy. I think I will try it. Thank you!

Lonnie, unfortunatley I do not live in the NW, I'm out on the prairies of Canada.

Thanks for the tips guys!
