RAF Harrowbeer Project- Dio # 2
Posted by Harrowbeer on Saturday, June 25, 2005 9:14 AM
Hi All,

Long time no post from me , never mind I am back now, wife added to our little? brood with son #3.

Some of you may remember the first Dio I posted here of the Walrus unloading a casualty having rescued them from the English Channel. Well this is the next in a series of Dio's I am constructing, telling the tale of a WWII airfield in Devon, England nr Plymouth, called RAF Harrowbeer. Over the next few? years it is my intention to build a representative aircraft from every squadron that operated from this airfield and place it in a Dio setting based on Harrowbeer itself, using background photos taken at Harrowbeer.

The scenario is as follows.

'May 1943 a Mustang Mk I of 414 RCAF has recently landed after a successful 'Rhubard' over Northern France. The aircraft is being refuelled, rearmed and the photo recce camera replaced.'

414 RCAF operated from Harrowbeer from 25/05/1943 to 04/06/43 employed on Photorecce/targets of opportunity and anti-shipping patrols.

I hope you enjoy the Dio.

Comments, criticisms hints and advice always welcome.

Looks great!

Its always a pleasure to see a/c dioramas in this forum.

I agree with Dorian, cut off those squares under the figures but if you want to reposition the figures for future pictures or use them in other dioramas you could glue very thin clear plastic squares onto the bottom of the figures feet instead of gluing the figures to the base.

Looks good to me. I'd go along with the others' recommendation about trimming the figures' bases.

Thanks for the comments guys, all suggestions gratefully appreciated. I have been wondering about the bases for the figures, I will want to reposition them for future sets ,the solution is so obvious, but I needed you guys to help me!! Thank you all for that.

jboutin, 10 days is correct, Harrowbeer was host to 70 odd squadrons during its history, the shortest stay was 1 day. Of course this would have been classed as on detachment, sent to another airfield for a particular mission or series of missions. At the time of its visit to Harrowbeer 414 RCAF was en route from Middle Wallop to Portreath in Cornwall.
