I think you've answered your own question with this statement....
Most wood, is a light color to begin with. A blonde color. You can probobly start with a khaki, dark yellow, or other light wood color as a base, A heavy wash of grey with successive lighter grey to white drybrushings to achieve your final effect. Any of the base color that shows through wil appear like scraped wood or the surface being exposed through use.
