Check out the book "Model Buildings Masterclass" it shows how to build some really great looking structures from scratch in a step by step format. One of the projects is actually a farmhouse. It is a really great book for the reference shelf.

Might want to play the game "Blitzkrieg" if you have a PC: someone did a fantastic job of designing the wooden and stone structures for that RTS wargame.
