Moving out. (Improvements made! New Pics!)
Posted by TANGO 1 on Saturday, July 9, 2005 4:18 PM
Smile [:)]Hi all,

this is something I've toyed with for a little while to take a break from aircraft building. Please forgive any glaring mistakesBlush [:I] as this is'nt my speciality. The scene depicts a USMC Patton tank providing cover to marines who are evacuating their wounded somewhere in Vietnam.

I enjoyed putting this scene together and have some more ideas in the pipeline. In the meantime, I'd appreciate any comments/advice you guys have on how I can improve my dio building. Thanks for stopping by and taking a look,

Darren.Wink [;)]

Note: this is how the dio looked originally, further on in the thread, are pics of the same dio with improvements added.

Looks pretty good. Good composition and layout. Couple things I see. First off, the track are on backwards. The chevron should make a "U" shape when viewed from the front. Tracks, especially the spare track could use some rust as well. The spare road wheels don't look right stacked like you have them. The two bumps that are on the back of the exposed road wheel are there for hanging them off the turret bustle rack, also, how are they attached together like that? The snorkel was only used when fording from landing ships to the beach, once on shore, they were removed since they limit the traverse of the turret. Tail lights, head lights, and vision blocks all need some glosscote on them so they look like glass, they are way too flat. A little more weathering with some reddish dust would look great too. The red earth of Vietnam got into/all over everything. Could use some antennas on teh two mounts as well. Looks good. Few tweaks and it will be great. Good job.

ERAD, Thank-you!

HeavyArty,

Yikes! I definately should have done some more research on this one! Thanks for taking the time to point me in the right direction. I'm going to do some tweaks and hopefully make the tank more accurate. Thanks for the advice,

Darren.

Excellent dio, Darren.

Being a non armor guy, I never would have noticed the things Heavy Arty pointed out,,,,some small changes and you will have a dio that will be hard to beat!

Aside from the rather "shiny" build, I think you have done a wonderful job and look forward to seeing some more.

OK guys, here are the improvments! I changed the tracks around, added some red dust here and there, removed the snorkel, changed the road wheel mounting and did some more weathering, oh I put some attenahs on top of the turret too. So, is it any better? To me it is-I hope the rest of you agree!

Nice dio for a start. I like the building you made together with the telephone lines. Just one thing though.. the soldier, I think you should tone down on the dirt. Can work on it still.. But overall.. Well done. Smile [:)]

The first pic looked good, but with just a few "tweaks" you've made this into a great diorama. Well done. The added dust looks good on the tank, what did you use?

As HeavyArty said earlier, you did a nice job in composing the scene. It looks well thought out. What kit did you use?

Looked good before, and looks great now, outstanding work Tango, very nice. I especially like the building, not really any need for foilage here, it's in a town/city, looks good as it stands.

Thank you all very much for your comments!Blush [:I] I'm really glad that I was able to learn/improve and share the results here.

LemonJello,
the tank was a Tamiya kit, the ruined building was Verlinden and the figures were from Dragon. For the dust, I used middle stone paint and sprayed a light mist over the entire dio, it was then sprayed again in the same way with a red/orange mix to represent the red earth often found in Vietnam. Trick is to be mean with the paint so you don't over-do it.

Thanks for your kind words Dan. Its thanks to guys like you and all the others here that I was able to learn how to improve my dio and make it better. After seeing the high standard of work around here, I know I have a lot to learn, but I've really caught the diorama bug and plan to build more dio's in the future. That'll mean I'll probably be asking a load of questions-hope you guys won't mind too much!

Your dio is very nice. My only comment is that you colored the field packs on the tank a tan brown. US field packs and ALICE packs were green. Unless those were the ARVN rucksacks that alot of GI's liked and their color was a brownish color. Your dio reminds me of mine that I had posted previously. Check out the link.

Hi TigerII,
your dio looks fantastic! Where did you get the figures from? The poses look very realistic. About those packs-I painted them that colour because I did'nt know any better! However, if anyone asks in the future I'll tell them they are the ARVN rucksacks-that should do the trick!
Thanks for stopping by,

Hey Tango,
Thank you for the compliment. The figures I used were Dragon's Air Cavalry figures and Tamiya's Assault Team. I had to modify the Tamiya figures to make them look like Vietnam era Marines. Keep up the great work.
