Headlights

Well, as ive been taught... After painting the light silver or whatever color your using, apply a heavy coat of gloss over it, gives it an effect of depth.

Thanks Hernando, any specific type of gloss? Future floor wax maybe?

If you have drilled the lights out already, you will need more than just glosscote to fill the hole. You can get model train lights and put them in. There is a company that sells different sized lenses for RRs and models. Can't think of their name right now, but they will have a lense that will fit. You could also try heating some clear acetate, the stuff products come in from the store. When it droops from the heat, push a lense shape into it with a rounded off sprue the same size as the headlight. Let cool, cut it out and glue it into the light after painting the socket silver. Another option is to paint the light socket silver and fill it with clear epoxy.

Heavyarty, thanks for the ideas. I think you're talking about MV lenses. I was thinking of trying those meltable pellets from Woodland Scenics, but am not sure if it would melt the light? Maybe I'll try your epoxy idea. thanks

Yes, it is MV Lenses, of course. Why I couldn't remember that is beyond me. Getting old. Don't know about the meltable pellets either, doesn't sound good though. I think they are similar to hot glue.

i redid the headlights on my T34 and i drilled out the lense and painted it silver, put a little piece of clear sprue inside for a bulb and then covered the opening with a piece of clear acryllic (overhead projector sheets to be exact)

Try filling the void will Micro Kristal Klear-but if your void is deep do it in a few layers. Tailights: just paint the back red then put in the Kristal Klear. It's also good for gluing canopies.

DoubleD & trowlfazz, also great ideas. DoubleD, did you just cut the sheet into a small circle and glue on top or give it a slight convex look?
