My First Diorama

I called it "Just Take the Picture!"

It represents 5 individuals, from various components of the 1st Panzer Division, who have "requisitioned" a staff car for a little Sunday afternoon sightseeing drive. In this scene, at the ruins in Olympia, Greece, three of the soldiers are trying to get the photographer to hurry up and take the picture while the driver enjoys a quick "snort" from a bottle of wine.

You've done a great job with this diorama. This is an interesting subject and you hit a home run with this one. This is your first dio, and I hope your creativity never wanes. I especially like the columns of the ruins. Thumbs Up [tup]

Wow, you need to do more for sure. Very creative and different. Only question is the guy wearing shorts and Khaki. Makes me think Afrika Corps. Did they indeed wear them there?

Yes. While stationed in the Balkens, personnel from the 1st Panzer Division were issued khaki uniform items to wear - although many still wore their standard black or gray items. Additionally, the 7. / Panzer Regiment 1 was unique in their wearing of white linen shorts with virtually every uniform combination during this time.

Awesome job Robert! It is great to see a Dio set in Greece; all those ruinis just scream to be modeled. You've captured them perfectly in this Dio and the figures are just incredible. Well done Robert!

Great dio, absolutely great! For a first, this is outstanding work. Greal planning and execution. The colums are spectacular, and a very cool looking scene. Well done!

very good! I do bind it difficult to believe that is your first dio.. LOL how long did it take you to do? I mean you must have done alot of reading and research not only on the specifics of the unit involved in the dio, but also on how to DO a dio! nice!

Actually, this is harder to answer than you might think. I started the preliminary research and forming of the base back in late June 2004 and the basic groundwork (without grass, trees, etc) was completed by August 2004. Then the fun started... First, Pensacola was devistated by Hurricane Ivan in September. After about a month worth of clean-up, I volunteered to build the NX-01 for our IPMS chapter's entry to the Nationals. Then I had the urge to build a Sherman. So basically from September 2004 until May 2005, the diorama went untouched. I guess the diorama essentially took 3 - 4 months of work to finish, but they were spread out over more than a year.

As far as research on dioramas goes, just about everything I've learned was found online...it's all out there for those who look for it. Big Smile [:D]

Exactly the two words i would have used, fresh and unique. That is what makes a truly great diorama stand out from all the others which tend to follow a similar pattern. Keep up the great work and lets see some more. Cool [8D]
