Live foliage ?
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, July 7, 2003 10:29 AM
I have found some nice small "cactus & shrub" looking foliage out in the yard, question is, how can I preserve it for use on a diorama?

I have it cut and sitting out to dry out a bit as I am doing a desert scene. Will a coat of matte or dull preserve them so they do no start to decay?

it would decay after some period of time... plus it would change colors from what it is now. a dull cote wouldnt kill of all micro organisms. maybe if u dipped it in formalhide, but this would possible decay your plant. i would say not to use the plants.

You could try freezing it and then sealing it with some kind of spray sealent. hell y not that how my science teacher preserves his captured tranchulasEvil [}:)]

I would let them die and dry thoroughly and then see how they look. If they look useable then, they'll be ok, just like dried flowers and such. You can then paint them and use them on your diorama.

i recently finished a diorama with a little river running through[ pics posted here]
i used live chives. to represent weed in the river.....I cut them too the desired length,
then dipped them in a white glue/water soloution...and dried em with a hair dryer...
then i painted them the appropriate colour ..another trick i use with live foliage..like mosses etc is to seal it airtight .. that is to encase it in a thin covering of clear casting resin, this process seems to preserve the plant/leaves /whatever..
like the mosquito in amber..from jurassic park...........
