Steve

As a dio-newbie myself, I've found the following two books absolutely indispensable:

Remember the most important thing: Just have FUN with it and enjoy yourself!

Figures come in a wide variety of poses, many without weapons at all. Plastic figures are cheaper than resin ones and are easier to cut up and re-configure to meet your needs (e.g. if you decide to have the prisoners with their hands in the air, or whatever).

Here are a few specific ideas on figure sets from the Squadron site. For the rescuers you could try something like http://www.squadron.com/ItemDetails.asp?item=DR6148. The capturers could be http://www.squadron.com/ItemDetails.asp?item=DR6061. And finally, the prisonders could be http://www.squadron.com/ItemDetails.asp?item=DR6120 with the weapons removed and the arms repositioned (they're otherwise in a pretty relaxed posture).

If you use Dragon figures you will find you can pretty much do what you want with them.

This is probobally a stupid question, but i was wondering if generally the figures came without the weapons molded into their hands. I have been looking for standing around troops to be my captured soldiers and was hoping i just wouldnt have to fasten the weapon to those guys

Steve:

For your idea I would suggest the Dragon line of figures. The reason for this... they have a fair range of figures to choose from. As well you can easily convert the figures to your needs.

One point though Special Forces as a unit did not come into use until after World War II. For your "rescuers" you could use Airborne units 82nd or 101st. Or you could use similar figures and have the "rescuers" be members of the same unit as your captives.

Good references are the best bet for creating your diorama.

Cheers;

Try squadron, www.squadron.com for most figures. From what I've seen, there are no ww2 US snipers, but there weren't many designated snipers anyway. My advice is to find a figure that looks like a sniper to you, and add in an m1903 springfield w/ scope from one of the extra weapon kits made by dragon.

I'm not very good at figures, but these are the sites I try to use:
www.acrylicosvallejo.com
www.paintersquest.com
www.ipmsstockholm.org
www.usarmymodels.com

My advice would be to buy some cheap figures to practice on first.

I'm sure someone more qualified than I can give you better/more detailed advice, but at least this is a start. Good luck.

Well i really only ever do Aircraft, but recently i have been bitten by the bug to try a dio. My idea is that a small group of germans are loading a handful of US soldiers into an opel blitz. meanwhile along the side of the road a group of US special forces are getting ready to make an ambush and free the captured soldiers. I have so many questions i dont even know where to start. I never have attempted painting detailed figures. and i usually only ever do 1/72nd scale. For this i have decided to go 1/35th.

1. What are some good sites to buy figures. Obviously i am going to need all different types and i would like to try and place the order at one spot. I would like atleast one sniper figure for the rescuing troops and i havent been able to find any WWII US snipers

2. If anybody has any good links on how to paint figures, please post them. Like i said the only figures i have ever painted are pilots and its not really critical since you dont even see them from the waist down.

i have a lot of respect for you guys and im sure i'll get a lot of responses. I really love coming over to the dio forum and just looking at the cool pictures of the scenes you guys create. I'm sure my first attempt wont be anything close to the calibre of what i see here but i am very anxious to give it a try

Thanks
Steve
