How long to build a model/dio

Takes me forever. It usually takes me 3-5 months to finish a kit. I just don't have time to put in a lot of hours. I'm also just a slow builder too.

I can relate to your dilemma (except for the family obligations part), I' m a very active outdoors person and besides attending classes and clinical rotations for a respiratory program I'm enrolled in, I also maintain a metal sculpture and fabrication business. There's never enough time in a day! I finally came to the conclusion that in order to finish any of the modeling projects I'm currently involved with. I just have to accept the fact that they're long-term. I get in an hour here and a couple of hours there, but I make the most of that hobby time and instead of frustration, it's become my 'quiet time' where I can just relax instead of putting pressure on myself to finish.

It's surprising just how much work is accomplished when those random hours add up. Another point I made of doing was allowing myself realistic goals, especially when considering any group builds to become involved with.

I`m by no means a speed builder,it just happens that way,but when I latch onto an idea
it doesn`t take me long to round up everything I need and start building. I do have all the time in the world being on a pension. Having said all that a diorama will take me a good week to complete,one vehicle a day or two and say seven soldiers to put together and paint, 4hrs. I just this minuet put down my paint brush,I just completed my CMP short chassis radio van,started at 8pm and it is now 5:18am.

The longest it has taken me- well Im currently working on 2 dios that should not be done for awhile. The longest so far was probably a month with the figs and base.

The shortest was a dio I did was in 2 days, figs and a base.

The longest for just a build, Tamiya tiger late, running on 7 months now.
the shortest time for just a build, couple hours for 1/72 jeep.

The best part about it is that the Gods do not subtract from men's lives the time they spend building models.

Take your time, its still more bang for your buck than most other hobbies. How far has $20 ever taken you before?

I can totally sympathize with there not being enough hours in the day. I have to say though I would like to have the time to finish a kit in a few months. I have been working on one kit for a year. The delay is in the amount of scratchbuild but still.

my fastest time was three days for a model of the graf spe(?). turned out pretty good too. lately though, ive got no time, and my builds are taking months to be completed

well JC, if you just wanna get rid of them, y'know, hint hint...LOL

that's why I stopped stockpiling/buying models. I have 20-30 lying around unbuilt/unopened that may never see the light of day.

wow, yeah fortunatley my fiancee is cool with me having some ME time, and it seems to be good for her, maybe cause I'm not annoying her with anything, except the mess at the kitchen table? lol

I sometimes paint warhammer figures, I can finish one in an hour, that's very satisfieng.
Tastest build: a 1/76 tank, with base (matchbox) I had that done in a week. (altough it was meant for mad matchbox WEEKEND GB)

Rich, I'm in the same boat....my shortest was a teeny vignette (should have pics up soon) and it only took me like a week to do. But most of the time a dio will take me anywhere between 2-5 months to do. Only because I only get to model about 1-2 hours a night, if I'm lucky.

Time management, designate set times for specific activities, that way you get to do a little of everything except work, you get to do alot of work!!

Or you get rid of the kids LOL

The time troubles that you describe are very common with modellers...
You just have to sit it out until you retire...
