Water Splashes???
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, September 22, 2005 10:28 AM
k so i've seen a few dioramas with water splashes made from clear casting resin.

I am thinking of having my armor cross a shallowriver at high speed with water splashing away in the air....

I know it can be done but with what and how? I have absolutely no clues...

Also can clear casting resin be tainted with acrylic or oil paints? Not the clear type paint i mean... Like tamiya flat earth or dark brown colors. or even burnt umber...

I'm fairly certain paint can be added. Your best bet would be to take some clear sheet (for support), cut and mold it roughly to what you want then use Acrylic gesso to build it up and gesso can be easily tinted with acrylics without worrying about chemical reactions. Sort of like building thrown mud on wire.

QIKsilver:

Adding to the above suggestion of clear sheet to support.

I have seen a similar topic to what you're asking about. The outcome depends on your skill level, however it is still fairly easy.

1. Form a sealed box the size of the finished diorama.

2. Layout the scene and size the water area

3. Block in the water area with plasticene and place the AFV or vehicle in the water

4. Sculpt the "displaced water" in waves from the plasticene and brace the curves and angles solidly

5. Remove the AFV or Vehicle (make sure the waves are where you want in height etc.)

6. Mix clear resin with the chosen colour and pour in thin layers on the top of your plasticene molds.

7. Continue pouring layers until the desired result is achieved

8. When the resin is finally set remove the plasticene mold support and finish paint and any touch-up required.

9. When you're finished you should result in formed waves and large splashes that can be anchored in to the base and a thin layer of resin will tie the AFV or Vehicle in to the river and blend the splashes to one uniform looking body of disturbed water.

10. Final stage is to add a few gloss coats and maybe some microballoons thrown in to simulate bubbles.

I hope this helps you achieve what you want.

Cheers;

Gregory

|Hey Gregory

One question, when I did this with the same plasacine method, it melted with the heat of the resin cure andlet the resin pour out, the remaing resin had plastcine stuck to it so I had to rethink. Do you coat it with anything ?

How did you do this as it would seen a little easier to me, help please :)

This link gets passed around a lot I think, but here is a fine show of water frothing. Leave it to "boat people" to figure out water, eh?

you could use very clear plastic card, attaching the airborne water to its edges. that would give the impression that its in midair
