Hey colin,
Have you ever tried childrens "play" sand fine grade??. I have used that on a couple of dessert dios and it does look good.
Just remember to add tones of brown, tan and other earth tones to help aid in the weathering factor.

I have seen numerous prototype photographs showing the sand used by locomotives for traction; around the rails. I am a model railroader, modeling in HO scale. Can you simulate this with...like...say...plaster dustQuestion [?]
