I only use acrylic paint but you have a valid question. The foamboard is sandwiched by a layer of paper on bothsides. If the paper becomes too wet, then it can look soggy. What I do is brush a thin layer of white glue on the paper surface of the foam board prior to painting and us airbrush to paint. I also do my post-shading via airbrush. I use a wash wash of acrylic paint diluted with alcohol. If the paint on the structure is already cured, the wash will not affect the paper surface anymore. The foam itself is waterproofed.

For the individual bricks, I cut the foamboard to the desired sizes and paint them and mix them with broken pieces of flower pot as shown in one of my previous diorama.
