STALINGRAD ROADS..

If your doing a Stalingrad dio, I would reccomend looking at this site.  www.stalingrad-info.com.

I am currently doing a very detailed dio for my father in law.  His father was a commander in the Russian army during the battle of Stalingrad, and recently passed away.  That web site has lots of pictures and information.  If you are trying to build something historically accurate, that is the best site I have found with information about Stalingrad.  You can spend hours there.  Good luck

You would probably be safe in representing the streets as well-built from brick with a concrete or asphaltum overlay. The city named for " Uncle Joe " would have only the best. If you model a winter scene, then a layer of snow and ice on the streets would be true to history.

Just use rubble, I assume that The Battle of Stalingrad is your theme, so there will be tonnes of rubble. Even on the opening day there was a lot of rubble

Because this topic holds great interest for me I did some more searching. I found some great pix of roads in Kiev, I know it's not Stalingrad but the streets were very similar. It would appear most streets in the city were a type of cobble-stone at one time, BUT some streets were then covered with a type of concrete or mortar or something of that nature.

Stalingrad was a large city and the streets downtown were made like most large citys, from concrete. In the major parts of town the streets were very wide. I have seen pictures with streets that look to be 4 to 5 lanes across.





Now if you need streets outside of the major parts of town, hard packed and well traveled dirt will do. Some of the pictures I have seen from around the factorys looks to be dirt as well, but I could be wrong. The roads in the worker housing parts of town look to be dirt also, these areas were generally located around the factorys.

Every photo I have come up with so far, (a few hundred), show nothing but dirt and rubble. I can't find a photo of a clear street anywhere. I did find this cool site with some nice color shots a relic building, left as it was after the battle. Gives a good impression of the architecture. There is a bit of road in one, but what is it made of? It looks like sandstone cobbles to me.

roads soon became completely choked (i mean more than a couple of feet deep) with rubble. conditions were so bad tanks were unable to successfully operate.

Rubble and dirt over anything else.
