Building model buildings HELP!!!

Shep Paine's book (2nd edition) has an excellent section on buildings.

Two books that would really help you in this are

1. MODEL BUILDINGS MASTERCLASS - Roy Porter (Excellent Book, lots of reference and varied subjects of structures)

2. Architectural Modelling in 4mm Scale - Author Unknown - (Great book, lots of reference and how-to information, details of various means and methods of construction, everything from tools to use to materials)

If you can locate a copy of either of these I know most of your questions will be answered.

Buy some kits, depending on perspective, HO kits should work. This way you get a large selection. Scratchbuilding is a lot of fun. Balsa and thin cardboard work really well. Look for a 1/72 scale ruler at your hobby shop.

Buildings can be easily made out of balsa wood sheets or artists foam board. Simply cut the walls and then cut doors and windows. Cover it with some plaster and you have a wall. Frame out the windows and doors with some small strips of balsa wood and you are set. For size of doors and windows, a door would be 1" tall and about 3/8" wide. Window could eb any size, but make sure it looks in porportion to the door. Basically, 1" in 1/72 scale equals 6 feet. Also, you can use a figure to gauge if the doors and windows look right.
