SA-2 transporter on base
Posted by zokissima on Tuesday, November 1, 2005 11:15 AM
Ok, so it's not much of a dio, but it's a base, and I thought some of you here might be interested in seeing it. If anyone tells you that dio bases can't be done on the cheap, they're wrong.
FOrgive the pics, as the digicam just increased the contrast dramatically.
Anywhoo, base is pine board, with moulding glued only to front. I did this, as the unit is going into a shelf exactly the same witdh, so it fits flush.
Groundwork is sifted earth from my back yard, mixed with 50/50 water/white glue mud mixture. It took a while to spread it around nicely, and about two to three hours later, I could impregnate tracks. I spread some fine rocks and dirt from the gutter, and a couple of sticks. The base was airbrushed with a dark brown craft paint (meant for airbrushing), then given sevaral washes and drybrushes, with regular poster paint. Felt no need to waste money on expensive hobby paints. The grass is tinted sawdust, attached with white glue, then when dry, airbrushed with Tamiya olive green and medium green.

You did a wonderful job on the model and the base, Zok. I love how you weathered the transporter. How detailed is the engine?

Thanks for the comments.
Dwight, the kit comes with a full engine, and outside of some wiring, is fairly complete. However, the firewall does have some missing detail, which is quite apparent if you leave it open, as I did on mine. Most of it is an easy affair to scratchbuild however.

Zok, is this the Trumpeter kit? Looks great, you've done a good job overall, a couple of figures and it'll really shine!

Definitely and awesome work! I have not seen much Russian stuff, and it is refreshing to get views of more than just the U.S. and German hardware. Mind you, it is all really cool stuff, but the variety is always good to keep the mind going.

Again, thanks for all the kinds words. Kelly_Zak, and sasd, it means a lot to her good words from you guys, as the work I've seen on these boards from you guys is very inspiring to me. I hope I'll be able to pick up some pointers on making more realistic groundwork, and the painting thereof, in particular.
