Wall material
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, July 20, 2003 8:31 AM
Currently working with Lord of the Rings gaming miniatures. Any suggestions on materials for building walls, fortifications and battlements? I have the GW Helm's Deep castle, and would really like to expand on it.

A great material to do walls with id foamboard. It's a thick sheet of some kind of dense expanded polystyrene sandwiched between two sheets of thick paper. It's available in art/craft stores (in UK anyway!) and is quite cheap. You remove the two backing sheets and you can then engrave the foam with a cocktail stick or something similar. Acrylics work well on this medium.

Architects use this material (with the backing sheets!) to create their 'models'.

Do you have any sources for online mail order? This seems to be what I've been looking for.

Thanks for the link! A little on the expensive side, but a great place to start.

Better shop around. Art/craft stores can be expensive.... If you know of an architect firm near where you live, you could always ask for scraps of foamboard..? Design companies, art galleries and museums also often use this stuff to print the labels that go with the artwork/exhibits. It's often done 'inhouse', on the cheap, and there's often scraps to be 'rescued'...
