Or instead of layers you could build a pile with plaster or foam or clay or something and put the sand on top of that...

Would that by any chance be the same sand that you put in between pavements?.
Its really fine and coloured a light yellow.
How would you apply it so that a pile is formed?

try the real stuff, use what they call sugar sand (on account that it's so fine).

A few years back I bulit a Panzer in winter snow. I used the soda method and gave the entire model a coat of clearcote acrylic sealer. Thus far it has not been eaten by bugs or discoloured.
Im really looking for the effect of piled fine sand, airbrush can only go so far.
Any other suggestions?

First off it is an Abrams, not an Abram. Named after WWII tank commander Creighton Abrams.

Baking soda is not a good idea, not for snow either. Food stuff will eventually be eaten by bugs or discolor and get nasty over time. Best bet would be a heavy drybrushing over a light dusting with an aurbrush of the sand color.

I recently saw a photo of an M1 Abrams in Iraq, with mine plow. It looked like it was in a large sand dune.

I really like the look of fresh sand on the tank, and wondered how you would go about portraying this.

I was thinking bi-carb soda, glue and water. Except instead of keeping it white, adding some light brown or tan into the mixture. What do you think?
