The Revell Germany site shows how to make a base for one of their kits in much the way you described. http://www.revell.de/typo3/en/products/model_kits/bastelstory/hermann_marwede/index.html?&L=1

Waterline and full hull in one diorama
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, December 31, 2005 9:22 AM

I'm building the Revell 1/400 Titanic at the moment with Tom's Modelworks PE set but I can't bring myself to hacking off half the hull to make a water diorama, but at the same time I want the option to display it on a stand as well. Has anyone tried building a diorama where you can place the full hull into a seascape of some sort, I was thinking about some kind of a polystyrene tile with the hull shape cut into it so that the full hull model will sit inside at the correct level.
