the way i paint cobblestones ( ones that u would find in a city) i go over all of them with a burnt sienna wash, or other light brown, then go with a dark wash (black or a much darker brown) and then i drybrush the cobblestones them selves with dark grey, and then another black wash and finnally accent the bricks with lighter grey

I was all set to go until last night. First it rained during the afternoon, then froze and then dumped snow. Doubt I'd get any good pics. I'll try again once conditions improve.

Thanks for the feedback guys, I kinda figured the greys but wanted a little advice before I began and totally muffed things up.  Plenty of brick walls to go by but there are really not any cobblestone  or brick roads around my home to reference.  LPT319 thanks for the offer but certainly post pics only at your convenience.

The problem is I work from about 5am until 7/8pm so its dark when I get out. Maybe I can swing through the local town here and snap some shots during lunch and post. Its nothing really exciting, but it can give some ide'ers.

LPT319, that sounds like a great idea, hope you can get some up...

I usually will paint with a 2-3 shades of grey in different areas, then followed by a straight black wash, then I dry brush with a few different colours to vary the stones even further.

Ive seen all kinds of various colors and patterns, so you really have a lot of lattitude. However,  I would definitely use earth tones (more grayish) since the weather (cold and rain) tend to wear on them. I have seen some reddish brick colored cobblestones on occassion as well.

If I had to categorize them, I would say the cobblestone used on pedestrian or side streets are mainly square-like in shape about 1-2 inches in length and width with slightly rounded edges. I've seen flat top and slightly roudned tops. I have also seen on occasion some longer ones mostly used in large open areas such as the central market areas. Its hard to say because there are so many variances. As far as cracks I'd recommend either an earthy dirt or dark black. Again, it varies.

I've lived for 3 years in Germany about 30 min from Regensburg and been all over. If you'd like I can try to get some pics, but right now my work hours don't allow much leeway. I can snap and post some in about 2 weeks if that is cool.

i don,t think there is a real " formula" for colours of paving stones, it could be geographical, ie: the type of stone available in different parts of the world.

i used a combination of greys and browns with some lighter colours randomly dropped here and there .

i also used a fan patten in my layout.i actually used split peas for my cobblestone road.

check out the pics of my diorama 'road block blues" hopefully you find something to help!

good luck

Cobblestone and Brick roads

Can anyone suggest what color ranges would be best for European cobblestone and brick roads?  I have the whole red, orange etc. range ok but would herringbone style cobblestone colors be tan and beige or more towards grey tones?  Also what would be the best between the cracks colors a darkish black, light or dark grey, or an earthy dirt?  Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
