HELP I need to make a willow!!!!

I have the book you are referring to, and I can see what they used for the willow tree. Since it is the wrong time of year to be out scrounging around for grass heads, I'd look towards the local craft store's dried flower selections. I'm pretty sure I've seen stuff like there.

So is this stuff regular grass? Can I grow it from seed? How long would it take to from about 6 inches long? I have approx two months.

Well, I'm not a taxonomist, so I don't know what species of grass this is, but it looks like the seed heads come from a rather tall type of field grass, something 2-3 feet tall. I don't think you would want to try growing it, besides, you would still need to find the seeds! Do you have a local craft store, like a Michael's or Hobby-Lobby, that is where I would look. Most craft stores have a large selection of dried flowers and ornamental grasses. I'm sure I've seen stuff like this in Michael's, though surely not in the right colors.

Colour is not a problem but looks are. I was told Pampas grass or asparagus ferns might work but, looking at the web pictures, they don't seem right. I will try Michaels as you suggest and maybe some nurseries as well - I don't mind drying them myself. Too bad it's March or I could even find some in a field.

just for the heck of it, what scale are you working in??

Well the figures are from GW's LOTR game ~ 10mm or so (1:48?). My tree stands about a foot high

with a branch radius of about 8" or so. Fairly big but I need leaves that are to scale (more or less).

It turns out that there are grassheads growing in a nearby field to me that are similar to the ones in Windrow's book and they are FREE!  I don't know the species but there is plenty for my needs. I'll post a pic when it is all done. This comes after weeks of bugging florists and nurseries in the area. I did have to buy floral spray, however, to make them green. Since it's March, the heads come pre-dried!

You can post a photo one of two ways. The easiest is to sign up for a host like photobucket and upload your photos there and provide a link. Or you could open the photo in your editing software and copy/paste it directly into the text frame (here) where you type your response.

Here's the end result! Not too bad I would say... it got me a silver Golden Demon at Gamesday Canada.
