I find "Woodland Scenics" products to be the best, and the easiest to use. Their "Realistic Water" is ready made and just needs pouring on and shaping. To add to it, they have "Water Effects" which can be used to add such things as ripples, wakes, rapids and waterfalls very convincingly and which allows great control. They still make their "EZ Water" which comes in crystals and must be heated in a pan (or similar) before pouring. This does not take too long to dry and becomes tacky quite quickly as it cools. Applying a hair dryer to the partially set resin creates ripples over large areas. Blowing down a drinking straw gives you more control. The only disadvantage I found with EZ Water though, is that it is of a very thick consistancy and bubbles are rather difficult to get rid of before it starts to set.

Theres 18OZ's that will cover 150 sq inches 1/4" deep, or double that 300 sq inches 1/8" deep etc, or it can be brushed on paper thin.  Can be poured 6" deep if you want, no need to layer.  Will still set up in 24 hours.

For those of you wanting to model water, a new product "Magic Water" works well.  It is a 2 part epoxy, formulated especially for dioramas and model railroads, to remain pliable and clear.  Can be tinted though.  Requires no layering, wont shrink, crack, bubble or yellow.  Creates no heat, wont melt plastic or styrofoam, nor will it attack painted surfaces, and also has no noxious odor.  Sets in about 24 hours and can be teased into ripples & water effects. www.unrealdetails.com
