88mm Flak Diorama
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, April 29, 2006 12:36 AM

Hi,

This is my first topic post in FSM forum, Yay!

I just got a phone call from my local store saying my Dragon 88mm Flak with crews has arrived. I'm planning a winter diorama for it. I have an unopened Tamiya kit of germans at rest with winter clothings (can't remember the actually name of the kit). I might plan my diorama with the 88mm crews are at rest sometime during the cold winter of the Eastern Front. Any suggestions?

I'm thinking of adding another vehicle, probably a Hanomag or something. Any other ideas on this? . Is there any FAMO kits at 35th scale other than expensive Tamiya's?

How do you simulate snows? I heard that some ppl say using toothpaste......Confused [%-)], I have doubt that works. A cool guy somewhere in this forum said he made snow effect using white glue and white sand.... how to get the white sand? I'm thinking of using white glue with white pastel chalks (or probably normal chalks teachers use in school), do you think it'll work?

I'm going to try out the white pastel wash technique demonstrated on a T-34 in one of the FSM issues years ago.

Finally, anybody have good photos of a 88 gun in winter time? I saw a thick book with pictures all about the famous 88mm flak and its variants, but it's just cost me too much. I was just wondering do you invest in books that cost more than twice of the kit? I'll probably just make 1 88mm flak gun model in my entire life. The book won't mean much to me after the completion of the model.

I have no other friends who enjoys modelling, there are no modelling clubs or whatsoever in my country as its not a popular hobby. I will enjoy modelling chats in this forum.

Thanks.

hey

is it the dragon 3 in 1 kit.for snow you could use microballons - woodlandsencics has a big container of the stuff  can be found at your LHS,sounds like a good dio, maybe add the famo full of gear.you could add a fire and they could sit around that but i think they wernt aloud to have fires because it could give there postion away.i havnt bought a book yet i usually use the internet.

Snow can be made in a number of ways. Powdered Alum, (Aluminum Sulfate) or powdered Epsom Salt, (Magnesium Sulfate) are good choices, both can be bought at any drug store or supermarket. Gypsum will also work and can be obtained from a scrap of wallboard. Stay away from things like baking powder and baking soda, both will decompose over time.

Here is a wintertime shot of an 88;

I have picked up the 88mm I ordered from the local store..... IT'S SO SEXY!!!

It came with 2 aluminium barrels for both Flak 18 and Flak 36.... it means i use the remaining parts for the next 88mm project or self-propelled gun project. I can get some pictures of the kit if anyone is interested.

I'm still thinking of a theme for the kit. and I'm still looking for other vehicles other than expensive Tamiya FAMO to place beside the 88 for diorama. Cold winter of the eastern front is still in my mind. The kit is so impressive that now I'm considering to invest on a very detail and informative book about the 88.

I'll like to gather more ideas.

Thanks

Sounds like you have the Dragon kit. That's good because the crew included with the kit is in winter gear.
I'm building that kit now, but it will be set in North Africa. You should be able to find pics on the web of 88's in winter on Eastern Front.

Are you going to set the gun up as anti-air or anti-tank?

Here are some links to good reference pics of the 88 itself. These can be very helpfull during the build.

If you''d like to really dress the gun up, consider Voyager PE kit.

Keep us posted on the build and have fun,

I have that Dragon 3 in 1 kit also and I planned to make my first diorama with it.  I made some test with Polyinstafill from Lepage.  It is a filler for deep holes and cracks on drywalls.  You can apply it thick on a plate and shape it as you like when it is smooth or carve it once it as hardened.  The good thing about it is it will never change shape and it is already white.

That kit is awesome and I can't wait to build it!  Post some pictures of your progress when you can.

No matter where you go ....... there you are.

Hi Joel,

Thank for the great info. I've been to tanxheavan.com yesterday, they have alot of detailed photos of the gun. It's a very useful guide to paint the chipped-paint patterns.

I'm planning an antitank in the eastern front. The dragon kit provided a paint scheme for 1942-43 stalingard, but its a flak 18 instead of 36.

I'll do all the plannings for a few months, probably will start my project somewhere July or August. I need to alocate budget for reference books, and need alot of time to search through toystores for suitable figure, accessory and other vehicles to suite the diorama. Our local store has really limited products on shelf....

Thanks alot

Try sprinkling baking soda over white glue, works well for me.
Allways looking for new model-building friends!

You're welcome.

Here's a couple of pics of my 88 in progress. Hope they come out. My test came out ok.

I'm going to set it up in a North African dio based on this picture.

This is my 1st build in 15+  yrs and I feel like I've jumped back into the hobby with both feet. After I was well into the build, I decided to add Voyager PE set. Hard enough to do, without going backwards and taking things apart to use them. Are you going to build the bogies? Since I'm only using the gun itself in my dio, you're welcome to the rest of the Voyager PE set (for the bogies) if you want. Be forewarned, very tedious and lots of parts.

Figures and accessories shouldn't be a big problem if you're modeling eastern front. I went crazy trying to find stuff for a North Afrika dio.
