i use the above mentioned method and have yet to find an easier or better looking method especially if you are adding snow to the dio, i finished mine then using spray glue i coated them, then lightly sprinkled baking soda on them and they looked perfect.

If you look at my post of Normandy Para in the figures forum you can see a similar tree I made with wire and seasoning mix.

Scratchbuilding are far better than store bought.

I scale model railroad is about the same size.  I isn't very popular but you may be able to find something.

I can't comment on buying trees, although Woodland Scenics are probably good, also check out www.scenicexpress.com.
