I have already started working on my dio. I am building my sam very slowly and carefully. I will post my progress on the armor forum around late autumn. I've decided that the sam is going to hide in a forest waiting for the aircraft to show up. The missles are already aiming at the sky. The trees circle the sam but are all far enough that it doesn't catch on fire. It is rather muddy on the ground. There will be a few low hedge near the tree and some shrud. There is an old road that runs through the forest with a road sign and a few long wasted oil tank half barred in the ground with mose all over them and rust. A soilder stands on a rock looking at the sky while another one is sitting on the rusty and weathered sam waiting. Theu've bee on the look out for enemy plane for quite a while now and they are very tired. The rain stain and subtle mud on the sam reviles how long they've waited.

You have a great idea for a dio there. Nice and simple. I don't know if I'd include tents. These are mobile SAM launchers, and I do not believe that they would be stationary for long. Also, the cans and tins and whatnot probably wouldn't be present. If it is a previously established road or path, then maybe a few rusted pieces, that were allready worked into the ground and discarded long ago. Or, if you're doing a maintenance or breakdown scene, that could work too..

Be careful about stuff like tent placement and trees. The launching rocket is going to create a lot of flame and wind so you don't want anything that's going to get lit up.

Remember, if the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

Personally I think this is a great little scene.  The key to a diorama, as in any model building as I see it, is to create an image, a scene that you yourself want to bring from the "mind's eye" to the public eye.  And it matter most what you want, and what you feel about what you develop, moreso than the rest of the world.

As for your scene, I have seen the model railroaders find backdrop photos or paintings and incorporate their tree and rock models very effectively to transition from 3D modelling of scenery to applying right to the backdrop surface for closer items in the image, and then the backdrop image itself.  So you would have some foliage and tree material applied right on the surface of the backdrop to give it some perspective transition.

Thank you. I've done a lot of internet pic surfing and found a few ideas I like. However, I am new to the world of dio and I wan't sure which idea would work and which idea won't. I an thinking of having my sam in the middle of a grassland with a few pine trees in the background. The ground is wet and semi-muddy. There are soilders on the ground looking at the sky with buniculars and there are little tents for camo. A few muddy and rusty oil tanks and tools lay on the ground. Is this idea doable? Tips would be appreciated. How do you do mud? Grass? Pinetree? Tent?

Here's some sites that I found from google that has some interesting pics.

www.aeronautics.ru/sa6photos.htm

www.aeronautics.ru/nws002/kub.htm

www.grostenquin.org/other/gtother-448.html

www.army.cz/scripts/detail.php?pgid=24

There's a lot more than I could look at right now.  These are just some that I thought had some cool ideas for a dio.  I went to google, then went to the image search and typed in SA-6 Gainful.  Hope this helps.

Why not do some research? Google is your friend. Look up SAM-6 and find some pictures to see how and where it was deployed.
