Barbed wire at Omaha? and wet sand look?
Posted by IanIsBored2000 on Wednesday, October 25, 2006 6:16 PM
Ok two questions here.  First, is was their barbed wire used on Omaha beach.  Yes I know there was tons up by the cliffs and there was bangalore torpedoes and all, but I mean closer to the shore? was there any around all the Czech hedgehog bariicades?  My second question, is how would you make the look of wet sand? just beyond the waters surface, you know, as the wave recedes, the sand imediately in front of it is still darker beacuse it is wet as the wave pulls back and then washes forward again.  Any ideas would be great.  Oh, and while your here, was there any speical poistioning to the Czech hedhogs and other barricades, such as all in a line along the beach? or were they just scattered beacause the Germans had no idea what time the allies would reach the beach, therefore meaning they had no idea how high or low the tide would be at that point in time?  Thanks, Ian

Yes, they are Tschechenigel or Czech Hedgehogs.

There are also Belgian Gates or "Element C", Tetrahedra, Hemmbalk (logs driven into the sand at an angle with A-frame supports, usually topped with a Tellermine or sometimes with saw tooth edges), Schwimmende Balkenmine, (log rafts topped with Tellermines), Minenpahl, (Tellermine topped stakes driven into the sand), Hochphal (high stakes) and a few other types of Panzersperre or Panzerhindernis to be found on the beaches of Normandy. (Although most of these were primarily for use against landing craft, not tanks.)

Here is a diagram of the beach obstacles on Dog Sector of Omaha Beach;
