Im making a vietnam war diorama of aussie soldiers on patrol, any ideas for jungle folage?

Also, why is it that in some pics i see of soldiers on patrol they have packs and some dont, whats the deal. When on patrol did aussies carry their packs or not?

There's the easy and expensive way to do it, with PE foliage and tree kits (Scale Link for instance)

or the difficult and cheaper way, that is getting books from the library and making your own foliage from paper, thin sheets of plastic, plastic rods, sprues and foil...

The pack (or lack thereof) would depend on the length of the patrol, a recon last ing only a few hours or a night ambush would carry ammo and some rations, an LRRP, lasting as much as a week, would carry more ammo/rations plus other items like dry socks etc. and would have a larger pack.

For the jungle foliage you can also check out your local Aquarium store(s). They usually have a large selection of plactic plants for aquariums. You might find something suitable.
