I went to the super cheapy store down the street and picked up two industry brushes for about 2 dollars. The type you use for scrubing your car tires or rubber matts. The color was perfect and a little uneven with some black strands too...like you would expect in tall grass.
All the bristles were shoved into one big groove, glued in place. I just chopped up the brush in my band saw in a whole bunch of little pieces. Then I broke off chunks with the glue still attached so make even smaller pieces.
I put the base up in a drill press, and made about 100-200 unevely spaced holes. Then I started glueing the chunks in, one by one. Some I even clipped with some scissors to make the field go up and down. By making the holes unevenly placed, it left some space here and there, like a real field. I left a space where the russians were coming through and spread out long strands on the ground to make it look like they had cut their way through.
Thanks for all the nice comments.
