m1garand;

No disrespect to a fellow ground pounder...

Your observation (unfortunately) is quite correct. The diorama is more like a camping scene. If it were necessary to build a fire for warmth it would make more sense for it to be in a small confined area. The scene would work better if the soldier were asleep in a slit trench / foxhole minus the fire.

This is possible and actually has unfortunately happened. I recently watched a program on the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry's arrival in Korea. The first day in country their area of responsibility was covered with U.S. infantry dead in their sleeping bags in a field. No sentries were posted and the Chinese Communists were able to infiltrate and massacre the soldiers as they slept.

Not the brightest way to end a post on a diorama criticism.

Cheers;

Gregory

Good work.  I agree with what others have pointed out.  Is that GI sleeping with his helmet on?

m1garand;

What's wrong with sleeping with a helmet on? I used to sleep with my web gear on! I'd lay down unfasten the buckle of the web belt and leave the shoulder harnes on and prop the buttpack under my head. Tip my helmet down and out like a light.

Not exactly as comfortable as a posturepedic mattress, but when you need a quick nap it worked.

Gregory

I did serve as a light infantryman, so I know what it feels like to be out in the field for several months at a time, trying to make myself as comfortable as possible.  I slept with my Kavlar helmet on, but it was only covering my face so that I can get a little retreat away from sun-light.Sleeping with a helmet on? can it be done? I supposed it can be, but if you look at this particular diorama.   This GI has gone out of his way to build a camp-fire and logs circling around it.  If GI in this diorama has done all that work, sleeping with his blanket on by the camp fire, I'm sure that there is no need or urgency for him to sleep with his helmet on.

Again, I'm not trying to make a point of whether you can sleep with a helmet or not, just simply trying to point out that there is no consistency in the story of this diorama (Not to be disrespectful to the modeler who built this).

Is that an American on the ground? It seems unllikely he be sleeping alone with a campfire in potentially hostile terriory. There seems to be a lot of empty space. I'd move the rocks closer into the middle and have the Germans going around them to maintain cover as long as possible. No need to climb over rocks the could slip and anunce your presence when you could walkl around them. Put a little bit of glue around the edges of the balnket to make it lay faltter onthe ground.
