Sherman WIP pics
Posted by Kevleerey on Thursday, February 22, 2007 6:39 PM

Hi, everybody!
My camera is working again, so here's a couple pics since the "Dullcoat Incident" with a little more work done. It is pretty heavily weathered, maybe too heavily. It is pretty muddy. The left side is waiting on a return roller substitute. The antenna mast came off while I was cleaning off the thinner stuff, and now I can't find it. Also, can you get an ammo box holder for a .50 w/o an ammo box? thanks for your comments!

I am thinking that I might get a tow chain and have it pulling a Jeep or something.
                                                                            Thanks for looking!

Hi Kevleerey nice sherm. yes there's some PE from Eduarde or if you don't want to have all the fun with the bending get Academy's U.S. machine gun set kit # 1384. again nice.

I like the weathering myself. The only comment I would have would be in regards to the first photo....I wouldn,t put that "box" blocking the field of fire for the .30 cal bow MG, simply put, not very smart for a tank crew to do.

Thanks for the comments, guys. Glad you like it. Crockett, you're right about that. I hadn't glued any stowage down yet just experimenting with where to put it. By the way, does anyone know a good kit for stowage? I like Verlinden's but they are a bit pricey for me. By the way, I found the antenna mast in the carpet under some newspapers and it is now on there. How long would a whip antenna be? I have some wire I think will work but I don't know the length.
Again, thanks for your comments!

Kevin,

Have you considered making your own storage from scratch? IMHO, the problem with these "storebought" stowage sets is that it makes your model look like everyone else's. I'm even getting to the point where I can pick out stuff from particular manufacturers. I think the stuff is overused and it's becoming a really unoriginal addition to a build. I know it's tempting to save the work, but it will pay off on the finished product...just an idea.

Hi, all!
So it's not overkill, then? Glad you all like it. Can you repost a thread in another forum or would I have to post in armor separately? I still needthe length for an antenna , though. I'm watching some stuff on eBay for my dio but I can't ever find a tow chain on there.
                                                                         Thanks again!

If you can't find a tow chain you could put a bulldozer thing on the front and have it pushing some other knocked out/abandoned ehicle out of the way. here's a link- http://internethobbies.stores.yahoo.net/vrl-646.html

Hey, thanks for the input.
Yes, it's the Tamiya 105.
I now have the tracks glued down. does it look right? It is also down by the idler wheel now.

I also have kind of an idea for a dio too. This is the basic layout.

The setting is a German shop that has been captured. The sherman has towed in the broken-down Jeep in for work. The Panzer is gonna be under camo netting. I will try and get some parts and tools off eBay. I was watching an auction with barrels and netting and spare panzer parts but I missed itBanged Head [banghead]. The empty space behind the tanks will have figures or something.(Maybe another Jeep?) Now all I need is spare parts and junk for the shop. Where do you get figures that are not fighting or with weapons? Just to be looking around the place. I dont want to have to buy kits new and have to modify them much.
                                                                          Thanks for your help!

hey there kevleerey, i am in the process of building a shermie right now. may i ask how you got the great mud effect? i already applied  mud to the lower hull with white glue and dirt, but i need the good mud color and still need to get the sides dirty.

Hey, thanks all!
Roosterpelo, I've been following the progress on your sherm in the armor forum. By the way, do you know if you can repost or copy a thread in another forum?
The mud is Celluclay. Well, actually its called Sculptamold but I think its the same thing. It is a cellulose powder used for making groundwork in dios. I mixed it with water and black and brown paint. Then I used a paint brush(or a screwdriver, popsicle stick, etc.) to spread it around with. I put it on pretty thick on the hull and suspension where the mud would accumulate. Then I used a brush and just put a little on the sides for "spatter." Once you put it on, you can wipe most of it off for kind of a film of thin mud. After it was dried, I drybrushed it with lighter and lighter shades of brown/tan because the higher points dry faster. For dry mud, you could also just make the "battter" a lighter tan or gray to start with. Also youd probably want a little mud on the decks/turret from where the crew climbs in with muddy feet. This is just how I did it, you could probably experiment with it all kinds of ways to find how it works best for you.
Hope that helps, I probably made it sound more complicated than it really is.
Thanks again for your comments everybody!

Hey, I'm back. I was just wondering, what size would a tank engine crate be? If I do a machine shop dio I want to put in some barrels and crates and stuff. I thought it might be fun to put some German engine crates or something lying around. I don't really have much done since my last post, I've been a little busy. I would like to at least get some parts and accessories started for something to do. Also, is Plexiglas very expensive? If my dio is very big making a display case thing for it might get kinda pricey. Thanks for any help you can give me!

One thing that I would point out is that the tracks should not sag the way they do.  Sherman tracks were much tighter.

Hi!
So would the tracks be completely tight, or just sag slightly or what? I've never built one before.
I've started making some balsa stuff now for my shop.

And I'm working on the layout some. I might need to rearrange it to take up less space.

Instead of the Panzer, maybe I will use an old Kettenkraftrad I have. I will need to rebuild it though. Also need figures- just americans looking around, and some wounded or surrendered Germans. Guess I need to get the basics hammered out first.
Thanks again for your help!

Sherman's had live tracks.  They had almost no sag at all, if any.

Here's a thread that explains the difference.

Look for heavyarty and Crockett's posts.

Hey, thanks Buff!
That's really helpful and very interesting. I'll go try and get them to come loose.
Does anyone know where I can get some corrugated styrene? They carried it at a hobby shop near here but then it closed down. I guess I'll get it online somewhere, but I never have before so I don't know where to get it. Thanks for your help!

I'm glad I could help.  If you can't find the sheet styrene you locally, you may have to go online.  I'm not sure it would be worth the shipping just to ship a package of styrene.  Sounds like a good excuse to add a few more things to the bill.Wink [;)]
