Vietnam dio idea
Posted by sawdeanz on Thursday, March 15, 2007 9:54 PM
I've been having a dio idea around in my head for a while, and finaly I have decided to post it here and see what you guys think. I'm not sure if everything is totaly realistic or not, so any suggestions are appreciated.
I imagine a scene where Rangers are evacuating an area being overrun by vietcong. They have come upon a large tunnel complex/vietcong command post thing. A hovering huey is waiting and giving cover fire. Men on the ground are giving cover fire as well while the others make a dash for the chopper. A radio man is calling in artilery coordinates, and vietcong are seen emerging out of well hidden tunnels and dugouts. I also imagine a river with a small footbridge crossing it, with the Americans on the one side of the river and the vietcong trying to overrun them.
A few other questions too. What might the footbridge look like? could it be a wooden bridge built by the vietcong to serve their army?
Also, I want to honor the Army rangers. I'm having a hard time finding ranger decals both for the people and the huey. I have seen some pictures of them using 1st cavalry helicopters, so I might just stick with that since that is what I have.
Thanks

It sounds big, but doable.

For shoulder patches for the Rangers, they would be 75th Ranger Regiment.  Echelon has some on their new US Army & USMC Patches, Insignias & Ranks decal set #353001.  Also, some rangers wore the new (at that time) ERDL pattern woodland BDU style uniforms as well.

The helos would not have any Ranger specific insignia on them.  Rangers do not have their own helos and used whoever was available in the Vietnam time-frame, so the 1 CAV birds would be fine.  Now, the US Army's 160th SOAR Nighthawks usually support them with helos.

The bridge would look fine as a small wooden footbridge made out of wooden planks across the river.

Good luck on it and keep us posted.

Thanks for the help. That is just what I was looking for. I also found some figure patches from archer, number 35033 with 1st cavalry, 63rd, 66th, 83rd and 86th Infantry Division patches, but the set you suggested had more variety for the same price. Do you know off hand a place I could purcase this decal set, I'm having a hard time finding it.

Archer did have set of Ranger patches (but I think those were mostly based on WWII) and are discontinued.  www.archertransfers.com.  I don't know who else may be producing such decal.  Good luck with your diorama build

Great Models Webstore carries Echelon decals, but they don't show the patches set yet.  They are still pretty new.  You can also order them directly from Echelon.

Good luck.
