Willys Jeep on D-Day WIP
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, March 26, 2007 4:07 AM

Hey everyone,

This is two firsts for me. 1) Building a Willys Jeep and 2) Building a diorama..lol
I want to use the 101st D-Day "version" decals and want to make a D-Day scene...but it wont be a beach scene. I have a wood base and some foam sheets that I will sand to shape. I want it to be natural looking so it wont be completely flat. I was just going to do a grassy/muddy area with a dirt road and that is where the jeep will be. I will try to find some D-Day pics to get an idea of the landscape inland from the beaches.

The Jeep is pretty much done except the windshield, decals, weathering, and a final dull coat. I havent started on the dio yet, but have a few questions since it will be my first. I hear of people using Celluclay. Can other self drying clays be used?  Also, can a hot glue gun(on a low temp) glue the foam to the base? And what can be used as grass?(Or simulate grass) I found some decorative sand to use for the dirt road and will airbrush some brown over it to simulate mud. I also have a cheap paintbrush that I will use to cut the bristles to make some longer strands of grass or small bushes(like on the edge of the road). Could I leave the foam as it is(with out a layer of clay) to keep its texture and simulate grass?

Thanks

For the groun work and shaping, you can use Celluclay, but you can also use Plaster that you buy from arts and crafts shops.

plaster of paris works fine for diorama bases and it is sculptable
