The university I go to is the #1 engineering and Architecture public school in the nation, so the model dept. in the campus store is huge.  I buy A lot of modeling supplies there.  They have everything you can imagine for constructing scale buildings.

Thanks for the replies.  Just noticed the "Scratchbuilding" forum, whoops, when did that get there? LOL

We also built most of our models from scratch.

A nice project I did once was - I used wooden dowels in constucting a log cabin.

Another place to get supplies and ideas is somewhere that carries a lot of doll house building & furnishing supplies. We would get sheets of shingle patterns, brick, stone, etc... and glue them to foam board.

If you have access to a table saw or band saw you can also cut your own dimensional lumber and all kinds of things from stock size lumber.

There are structural shapes, (I-beams, angle irons, round, half-round, or square stock, strips, etc.) a few simple stairs, ladders and the like which are made by Evergreen Scale Models and Plastruct. Scale lumber can be found at a reasonably good hobby shop or model train store. Everything else I used when I built architectural models, we built from scratch.

Is there a line of supplies for building scale models that architectural(sp?) firms use to build models of their potential buildings?  I'm thinking of dimensional walls, stairs, lumber etc..  If I can't afford to put that cabin up on the ridge overlooking that valley I figure I could dream in minature 3D.
