You should first check the kinds of houses that will be used in the diorama. By this, you should be able to draw several possible scenes adaptable to the said houses. Make sketches of these possible scenes and discuss it with your friend so that you can come up with a final plan for the diorama. I is possible that some houses may not fit with others as far the theme of the scene is concerned.

Once you have decided on the final layout and has prepared a plan of it then you can proceed with planning the construction. It is at this stage that you decide on the materials needed to complete the work. You may take a cue fro thyamis on the materials.

Good Luck.

Trees and grass houses etc are readily available. There is no point of proposing a certain brand. Alternatively you can finely chop green and brown paper to grain size, even use your homecooking mixer!!!!. to make grass. Wire can be used to make trees. For mountains it is better to make a skin-frame construction. Full solid can be realluy heavy. Plywood is fine.#HAve fun

Tongue [:P] I do woodworking and a friend of mine asked me to make her a Diorama for her collection of miniature houses and figureines. She figures it will be about 3 feet by 5 or 6 feet (give or take a foot in either direction)... It will roughly be about HO scale (Model Train sizes...I kind of know more abut model trains..maybe a little bit bigger). So I need info on:

What do I use for a base... she suggested a 3/4 inch plywood with heavy turned legs...

How do I make the scenery (it will be a town with various level ground and cemetary, houses, stores and a castle on a mountain, trees, roads, etc)... She has the houses and figures I just need to make the scenery/layout...

Any help will be appreciated..... PLEASE.... Thanks
