On Tracks: On Track? My StuG
Posted by Kevleerey on Monday, August 27, 2007 11:21 PM

So I 95ed my sherm, and for now I'm starting on my StuG III A. I'd like to try and do some throwed tracks(Those separate linksGrumpy [|(]...) I have one side about done, but was wondering how much slack, if any, to put between the return rollers. The other side I might do thrown or with a broken wheel or something. That I don't think should be too hard, but with that kind of damage comes inherent crew movement, ie open hatches, removed tools, etc., none of which I've done before. Maybe I could block hatches with crews comin' out? I dunno, ideas, anyone? I'll post pics tomorrow @ school (Faster'n dialup). How, also, do you paint that raindrop camo (alpenflage I believe)? I tried to do the brown stripes with the blade of my X-acto but wound up scoring the plastic. Thanks all for your help!

What you have right now so far as track sag goes looks quite good. You may want to depict an actual damaged or abandoned vehicle, if you did not want to deal with figures.

your slack track looks great ,most armor veicles require tracks to be tentioned up after a period of use in the field or on hard pack.for future reference watch bulldozers and other tracked equipment, they might give you an idea on how much a track will stretch during use.

as for the camo, practice practice practice til it looks good to you. btw your figures face from what i could see is off the hookBow [bow],i've been trying to do them for 20 years and cant come close to what you've shown, great job Smile [:)]

Yup, track looks good. Basically, the general rule with indie tracks would be about 96 to 100 track links per side, although sometimes in WWII pics you see more. And the track sag comes from 2 sources: one or two too many links, and loose tensioning.

Another thing is that sometimes a return roller will break or something, causing track sag. I'd say though, with everything in working order, anything from what you have now to straight-tight looks good.

Since the tension seems fine, I'll probably finish up the tracks tomorrow(Which I guess is now actually today). If I get some practice with my new AB, I might start painting the whole thing. As for the figures, I don't mind them too much if I can find the right ones. My main problem will be the interior, which will be pretty new territory for me. By the way, I gave up on ever finding my Sherman's return roller and MG cradle and went on without. Then I was in the basement, guess what I found. Now to pry apart some suspension...
Thanks again!
