Diorama "Talibanistan"
Posted by Model Maniac on Saturday, September 1, 2007 7:48 AM

Six years on and the world's most notorious and outrageous terrorists are still at large, somewhere in Talibanistan.

Diorama "Talibanistan" using ICM's Afganistan Campaign - by "Tuk":

This is the first time I let "Tuk" try building a typical diorama apart from small, figure-based dio's. How does it compare to his brother ("Art Instructor")'s work?

A dozen more pics are available at my latest page:

Have fun!

MM,

It's been a while since we saw Tuk's last diorama.  Overall, I like it, but IMO tires are bit too shiny for being in a place where it is nothing but dusty environment.  Figures look great, but may need to tone down clothing colors (or maybe it was reflecting lights off of your camera?).

Overall, the diorama looks very good, it gives a dynamic feel to the action portrayed.  Actually, I like the blue on the one figure, in that part of the world bright colors really stand in contrast to the dust.

The truck is nicely done, but the Mujahideen are not know for driving skills, maintenance, or cosmetic upkeep, I little more rusting, denting and bare metal (even on small parts of the sidearms) would have made it a bit more realistic  (Easier said than done, I know.)

Actually, it's only the tires that really need work, they are way too clean to be realistic.  Not only that, but the rocket launcher assembly weighs at least a ton, and the tires don't reflect any load.  Maybe one day model companies will offer truck tires with flat spots the way some aircraft models do.

Tuk needs to learn to fill seams. All along the tubes are major seams and a couple look completely split. The forward rear tire on the driver's side appears not to be touching the ground.

More and more people today ignore seams, and even ignore them when judging.  There are some world class builders out there over on Scale Auto Forum, but they leave ejector pin marks, modling seams, copyright stuff, and everything else, but for build quality and talent, they surpass 90% of the writers for that mag, the only thing they lack is the fundamentals, and most of them are kids.  16-17-18-19-20 years old.   Some as young as 14, and doing chop and section jobs, and building entire frames with working multilink lowrider suspension.  Keeping it in scale, and looking good as well.  I try to eliminate seams, but sometimes get a bit overzealous, anmd I go right past it, getting so excited to build the kit, it's like I don't see some of the seams.

P.S.

I have a model or two I'd sell you.  Proceeds go to my cousin  Kenny's fund to save his life though.  Would have to be after I entered them in the contest later this month though.  LOL

Many thanks for all kind comments and suggestions! I really appreciate them. I agree with you guys that the tires look too new. When I see Tuk the next time I'll give him a lecture about the tires and the seams too (the same also applied to AI, based on points I saw and other's comments on how to make it better). Tuk fixed the truck to the base at his home but on the way to my home the truck broke loose and the repair was not perfect. There's one tire that doesn't touch the ground and I fixed by adding plants under it.

Nice work.

It needs to be finished by placing a hellfire imissile on a downward arc above the truck.

Looks like the Talibs dropped by Les Schwab and picked up a new set of 44"s on their way to the Jihad!

EDIT: Is the future piece of vulture chow standing on the rear of the truck carrying an M203?

Man, I can't stop laughing at the 'vulture chow' thing...But yeah, it looks like a 203 to me.
