airfield diorama
Posted by dostacos on Tuesday, October 23, 2007 3:51 AM

my son and I are building a pair of AVG P-40 Flying Tigers and want to set up a diorama with the planes, a building or two. Question one, would the 1/48 scale Tamiya Citroen car work? What about some older German trucks, figuring pre-war everybody had equipment in the area.

any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I guess  I should rent Flying Tigers again too.....

I don't know what a pre-war Chinese scene would look like but I'd imagine that almost any period vehicle could be adapted to suit your needs.

I like to model in 1:72 scale have collected a few Russian vehicle kits to stand-in as "generic" civilian vehicles in dioramas. By doing a few simple modifications to the radiator grille, cabin or windshield, rear tray, running boards, etc, then giving them a civilian paint job, I think they'll pass OK. Not too many people would be familiar with Russian vehicles, so as long as they look the part, they should be fine.

Same goes for your diorama. The Tamiya Citroen Avant should work OK; they were produced in England also and considering that the three countries bordering China to the southeast were under French or British administration at the time, then it's perfectly feasible that there may have been a few Citroens getting about. Alternatively, if you want a period workhorse, Great Models have (had?) a 1:48 Gaz AA truck listed. These were a Russian-built equivalent of the Ford Model A.

Maybe a quick Google Image search on pre-war China would help??

You could convert a Willys MB Jeep as a Ford GP (not a Ford GPW, General Purpose, Willys), or as a Bantam BRC, or as a Willys MA, as the AVG had these in use.  These were the prototypes for the eventual contract winner Willys.

I believe some of the vehicles in that time frame in China were British.  I seem to remember the movie (it was on the other day) and I thought the vehicles were British but I could be wrong.

Sorry but the movie was made right in California in 1942 with no real P-40's used except in far away shots.  The vehicles were all American because where were they going to get British vehicles?  China had many different types of vehicles used as many different nations were there at one time:  Italians, Russians, Germans, French, British from Assam, and Burma, and India.

THey might of had Japanese vehicles, too because of the ongoing war at the time between the 2 countries.
