Paper mache recipe for modeling?
Posted by chevit2001 on Saturday, December 1, 2007 12:32 PM
Any one have tips for paper mache recipes to use for scale modeling diopramas? Would the good old paper and flour recipe be OK? I've read that it isn't good idea to use food substances in dioramas. I've used paper mache before so I'm fairly handy with it. Thanks!

I use Celluclay mixed with a good sized dollop of Elmer's Glue, some cheap acrylic brown paint, some ballast or woody turf for texture and just enough water to get a nice thick oatmeal cosnsitency.

Remember, if the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

Ive used watered down PVA glue before. But I would try to avoid paper mache because it has a tendancy to shrink when it dries. For my dioramas I use insulation foam or wire frames covered in gauze or plaster cloths. After you can go over with another plaster type product like sculptamold or just plain plaster.

I used Celluclay for the first time on my my recent base and was most impressed.

I mixed in PVA (white woodworking) glue alongside Ceramcoat acrylic paints and spread it along the MDF base over a thin layer of PVA. Worked well and did not shrink in any discernable way.

Well worth the extra effort of buying the bag online as it is not available easily in my part of Australia.

cheers

Hi Chev,

As an old railroad modellor, I used to tare up old newspapers into tiny pieces into a small bucket, add some wallpaper paste along with a bit of water and mix it well.Leave for a day or two mixing it occasionally. This is best done by hand as you will get a feel of the texture of the mach'e.Once the mixture is at the correct consistancy it can be used on your diorama or scenic base.
