Substatute for celuclay ???
Posted by Joe Montanti on Thursday, December 20, 2007 5:09 PM
Many year ago while in kindergarden we mixed flour and water to a paste and shreaded newspaper to make paper mache. How would this do for a diorama, would it work? Would it go rancid. If it would work it would be far cheaper than celuclay. Question [?]

I would advise against using any food product in a any aspect of dio making. The only one that seems to get past the rule of thumb is food coloring when used to give resin a hue.

Within all the different threads going on about Celluclay, I think AJ put it into perspective for everyone; when you consider the ratio of cost of Celluclay vs how little you use per dio, it's pretty cost effective.

Last time I bought a 5# brick, the price was $24.99 at Hobby Lobby. That's 80 ounces @ $.31 an ounce. With my 40% off coupon, that 5# brick actually cost me $15, bringing it down to about $.19 an ounce.

Say you use an average 4 ounces per dio (that's quite a bit, this stuff is as light as shredded paperSmile [:)]), that's $.76 per dio, yielding 20 dios.  The more you use it, the better you get at gauging how much you'll need to mix each time, bringing down your waste factor.

I'd like to put the offer out there that if Celluclay is unavailable in your area, I could hook you up. Hobby Lobby 40% off coupons rock for purchases like this. And the savings would more than cover the cost of shipping.
