Roads in the Ardenns???
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, October 19, 2003 9:27 PM
My question is what would the roads of the Ardenns forest that the King Tigers of Kampfgruppe Peiper were assigned to be like around o say December of 1944. The picture I am basing my Diorama off of shows the road to be pretty solid but the book suggests otherwise. If you want to see the exact picture I am talking about, it is in the book Nuts! The Battle of The Bulge by Donald M goldstein and some other people on Page 65 photo 4-40. Thanks for the help

They started out frozen and quite hard (it was the coldest winter in 50 years) but due to the traffic they oon became quite muddy. The book "Ardennes 1944-Hitler's last gamble in the west" has many pictures some showing Panzer IVs on top of the solid road and another showing a Jeep up to it's hubs. Any feilds that armor manuvered in were quickly torn up because they were not hard packed like the roads, the pics even show some plowed feilds.

those arent the pics im using but if you take a look at any of those, the roads do not look that used. the tanks and the car are not sunk in. I'd be using wet, no snow in the refrence pics.
