flight line?
Posted by scorpr2 on Friday, July 25, 2008 11:18 PM
Hi guys!  I need some help figureing out how to make a section of flight line, tarmac, and runway.  I've got lots of birds, but no flight line to park them on, so I'd like to fix that problem!  Any help is greatly appreciated!!!!!

I use a number of different base materials, wood, plastic picture frames, or sheet rock, but I spread joint compound (Sheetrock mud) on the surface to simulate the concrete.  I score the base to give the mud something to stick to, spread it on evenly and when dry, lightly sand any ridges out, add expansion lines, and paint it a nice greyish tan that I make out of tempera paint, put in a nice brownish-black for the tar-caulk in the expansion lines, add oil stains with thinned paint, then seal it with a clear flat spray varnish.  I add any runway markings, lines, and whatnot by masking and spray with enamel, flat-coat it again, then add the birds.

Expansion joints.  They keep the concrete from cracking during the natural expansion/contraction of runways.

I simulate runway/tarmac/apron with either grey or black sandpaper.

I cut it in to pieces that are about the scale size of a concrete slab. (1/72 size slab are obviously smaller then 1/48) I glue those pieces onto a base with white glue.

By firmly pushing the sandpaper down, the glue will rise between the seams. This is a good thing because when the glue is dry you can paint the seams black and they look like expansion seams.

If you want color variation and more depth then you can paint the sandpaper. Do not use a brush (the sandpaper will destroy it) but use a toothbrush instead (or an airbrush if you have one)
