Hobbycraft B-47B
Posted by jeaton01 on Wednesday, December 2, 2009 1:36 AM

This one is nearly done, in the first photo I put on a black fin cap and dirtied up the number 6 exhaust in the computer.  I promise I will do the same to the model.  This is a 1/144 kit, but it is about as big as a 1/48 Me-109.  However, take care not to set down one of those itty bitty outrigger wheels without thinking about it, I set one down on a paint bottle lid and couldn't find it for two hours.  I did clean up my work bench, though.  The kit has terrific fit,  almost no filler was used at all, even on the wing fit.  The decals even worked.  I would like to seal the decals, but I'm looking for experience there, as I don't have any with clear over SNJ.  Anybody done that?  The walkways need to settle down on the edges some mostly.  I cut them in sections and trimmed very close to eliminate most of the clear film.  The B-47E's have prettier schemes, but I wanted to do an early airplane so I did the B-47B version this time.  I have another Hobbycraft kit, the RB-47H, and have a couple Hasegawa 1/72 kits that will be and E and maybe a WB-47, which used to fly from McClellan when I was much younger.  I used to fly with a couple of ex-B-47 pilots.  They had a few stories to tell.

Very nice build John and even for 1/144th, it sure is a good size kit. I like the subtle weathering.

 Thank you for sharing

Very nice John! Well done. As far as clear coat over nmf, I have done it with not much problems. As long as you let it "cure" for , say, 24hrs. Use light coats, if it pools it will run the finish. Hope to see you Saterday!...........Harv

Very nice looking model John!  The B-47 is the best looking of the older USAF bombers hands down IMHO.  As for the clear coat over the NMF, I have never used SNJ but I do put Future over Alclad w/o and trouble.  As Harv said, light coats as the stuff will pool easily on such a smooth surface. Thumbs Up [tup]

You can seal the decal with my sealer or simply brush some dilluted 60/40 Future over the decals themselves.

Be sure to send me pictures!

That's outstanding, John! I have to agree with Frank...the B-47 is one of the coolest early jets out there!

Very very nice looking bird!!! Great job on the NMF ...really sharpThumbs Up [tup]

Its hard to imagine the scale of it...usually I imagine 144 kits as tiny...how'bout a pic with another plane say in 48th for scale and reference...Shock [:O]

Great looking B-47!  It is a nice kit for sure.  I made the mistake of trying to cover it with bare metal foil.  This was a mistake because it didn't work out on the wings.  The wings are so thin and flexible that I just couldn't get it to to work out.  Whenever I applied a bit of firm pressure to burnish it down, the wings would flex and it would wrinkle the foil.

That bird would make James Stewart happy to board her and fly straight to Yokota Air Base, Japan. ( Strategic Air Command ) movie. What a pair, a B-36 and a B-47. Two beautiful old ladies. Sweet job on the 47 John.

Thanks all, I appreciate the comments.  I overcoated it with SNJ clear and I am happy with the result, it didn't seem to affect the SNJ aluminum or the few patches of Alclad II on it at all.  I also added the tail cannon from .032 safety wire, painted the fin cap, covered over the navigator's escape hatch which silly me I had left as a transparency, and added some dirt look to the exhaust areas.  Done, and in the display case now.  B-47's are good for the soul!  And for Carlos, a companion photo with a 1/48 Mk 16 Spitfire.

Good KC-97 sequence in that movie- and even better, when the Squadron moves to Japan, there's a sequence with C-124s rolling around. In one, they load what appears to be a spare R4360 into the nose, and when they show the one taxi out, look closely for the "scanner" standing in the open nav dome and watching the wingtip clearances. let's make John build the SAC. That'd be great!

Great work on the ol' Stratojet.  General LeMay would be happy with that one, (IF he was EVER happy)!

Wow, John, that's excellent.  NMF still scares me as I've only ever brushed it on (many years ago).

The scale comparison with the Spit really hits home.

Hobbycraft and Academy B-47's are the same, the one I built was in an Academy boxing.  You would think Tamiya did the molds, the kit went together almost without filler.
